ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas): Care for the Toughest Houseplant
ZZ plant (Zamioculcas) care: it handles low light and missed waterings. Learn light, watering, propagation and why it's the ideal plant for offices.

In this article
The ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) rivals the snake plant for the title of "impossible to kill." Its glossy, geometric leaves tolerate low light, dry air and weeks without water. It's the king of offices and dark hallways.
Its secret: the rhizomes
Beneath the soil it hides thick rhizomes (potato-like) that store water. That's why it tolerates drought so well… and why overwatering is its only real threat: the rhizomes rot.
Light
- Ideal: medium to bright indirect light (faster growth).
- Tolerates: low-light corners and office fluorescent light.
- Avoid: intense direct sun, which scorches the leaves.
Watering
Water only when the soil is almost fully dry:
- Summer: every 2-3 weeks.
- Winter: every 3-5 weeks.
- When in doubt, wait. Yellow, soft leaves = too much water.
Soil and pot
Free-draining mix (potting soil + perlite) and a pot with holes. Don't repot into a huge pot: it likes to be a bit snug.
How to propagate it
Two ways (both slow, be patient):
- Rhizome division: when repotting, split the clump in two.
- Leaf cutting: bury a leaf (with its petiole) in damp soil; in 2-3 months it forms a small rhizome.
Is there a black ZZ?
Yes: the 'Raven' variety pushes out green new leaves that mature to an almost total black. Stunning, and cared for the same way.
Common problems
- Yellow leaves: overwatering (almost always). See the yellow leaves guide.
- Splaying/falling stems: too much water or too little light.
- Brown tips: very dry air or over-fertilizing.
Is it toxic?
Yes, it contains calcium oxalates: it irritates the mouths of pets and children if chewed. Wash your hands after pruning and keep it out of reach.
Give it medium light, water sparingly, and the ZZ will last you years looking flawless. Yours not looking great? Upload it to the AI diagnosis.
