Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum): Care for the Plant That Tells You
Peace lily care: the houseplant that 'faints' when thirsty. Light, watering, why it won't bloom and how to revive it. Ideal for low light and beginners.

In this article
The peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is one of the most rewarding houseplants: it tolerates low light, cleans the air and, above all, tells you when it's thirsty by dropping its leaves dramatically… only to bounce back within hours of watering. It's almost a pet.
Light
- Ideal: medium indirect light. It's one of the few that blooms without direct sun.
- Tolerates: low-light corners (it'll grow but bloom less).
- Avoid: direct sun, which scorches and yellows the leaves.
Watering: read its signals
The peace lily is transparent about its needs:
- Water when the plant starts to droop slightly or the top inch of soil is dry.
- Within hours of watering, it firms back up.
- Don't wait for it to faint every time: doing that often stresses it and browns the tips.
Use rested or filtered water: chlorine and lime brown the tips.
Why it won't bloom (and how to fix it)
The white flowers (actually a modified leaf called a spathe) appear with enough light. If you have healthy leaves but never flowers, it's almost always too little light: move it closer to a window (no direct sun). A light feed in spring-summer helps.
Humidity and temperature
It's tropical: it appreciates humidity. If the air is dry (heating), group plants or use a humidifier to avoid brown tips. Keep it between 65-80 °F, away from cold drafts.
Common problems
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Brown tips | Chlorine/lime or dry air | Rested water + humidity |
| Yellow leaves | Overwatering | Let it dry; check drainage |
| No blooms | Too little light | Move closer to a window |
| Faints often | Repeated drought | Water more regularly |
Is it toxic to pets?
Yes, it contains calcium oxalates: it irritates the mouths of dogs and cats if chewed. Keep it out of reach.
With medium light and watering by its signals, the peace lily is one of the easiest and prettiest plants to start with. Yours looking off? Try the AI diagnosis or see why leaves turn yellow.
